Directly across from The Dixie Café is the old Keene Spring Hotel. Keene was once a popular resort because of a nearby spring. This spring was mineral rich with white sulfur which was said to have healing powers. During the cholera epidemics of 1833 – 1849 in Lexington, Keene became a refuge for residents leaving Lexington during this epidemic. Today the hotel’s structure remains as a glimpse into Keene’s past and is placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
